In February, Florida Worldwide College appointed Jeanette M. Nuñez as its interim president, marking a historic milestone as the primary Hispanic lady to guide the establishment. Mrs. Nuñez, who had served as Florida’s lieutenant governor since 2019, stepped into the position following the departure of Dr. Kenneth Jessell, FIU’s sixth president since November 2022.
Born and raised in Miami to Cuban dad and mom, Mrs. Nuñez’s ties to FIU run deep. She acquired her bachelor’s diploma in political science and worldwide relations from the college in 1994, adopted by a grasp’s in public administration in 1998. Her early profession included roles in healthcare administration and public service earlier than she was elected to the Florida Home of Representatives in 2010, the place she served for eight years, rising to speaker professional tempore.
As lieutenant governor, Mrs. Nuñez performed a key position in state coverage, overseeing the Florida Division of Well being and chairing initiatives like House Florida and the Cybersecurity Activity Pressure.
